The Matrix Trilogy [4K UHD] (1999-2003)
|
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson (October 28, 2018)
THE MATRIX TRILOGY
THE MATRIX: “The Matrix holds up well after almost 20 years and two sequels. No, it doesn’t pack the same punch as it did in 1999, but it remains a rich thrill ride."
THE MATRIX RELOADED: “It may not pack the innovative wallop of its predecessor, but The Matrix Reloaded creates a powerful flick on its own. Inconsistent but ultimately satisfying, it leaves me wanting more and anxious for the final chapter in the trilogy."
THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS: “The Matrix Revolutions finishes a once-exciting series on a moderately flat note. I can’t call it a bad film, as it presents far too much good action and excitement to flop, but it lacks the humanity and depth that helped make the first movie such a success."

The Discs Grades: Picture A-/ Audio A-/ Bonus A
|
Nearly 20 years after its release, 1999's The Matrix remains a seminal achievement. Arguably the most influential movie of the 1990s, it continues to give us a lively, involving experience.
Both released in 2003, its two sequels - Reloaded and Revolutions - offer diminishing returns. Reloaded still works pretty well, but Revolutions turns into an erratic finale.
Still, I like the whole trilogy, and this 4K UHD set packages the three movies together in a satisfying manner. We get excellent picture and audio along with a ton of useful supplements.
Note that the "Trilogy" 4K UHD bundle doesn't come with any exclusive extras. Not that it needs them, but it acts as a simple boxed release of the three separate 4K UHD sets.
With a list price of $70.99, though, the "Trilogy" box provides a good value if you want all three films. It brings a substantial discount versus the prices on their own.
